Internship Program

CASA of Westmoreland considers interns part of the family. We pride ourselves on the educational opportunity and view it as such. Internships include training and orientation, and focus on learning and developing new skills and gaining a deeper understanding of concepts through hands-on application in a roll-up-your-sleeves non-profit environment.

The non-paid educational experience includes assisting with recruitment and community outreach, grant research, training preparation, fundraisers, special events, database maintenance, social media and other duties as assigned.

Interns must successfully pass fingerprint and child abuse background checks. Required hours and weekly schedule are determined collaboratively, taking into consideration the intern’s school requirements and the organization’s needs.

General Description

The CASA Office Intern will report directly to the Office Manager, Kelly Rowe and will work with the Advocate Supervisors/Program Team. All intern positions are unpaid but may be taken for college credit.

This position description is not intended to be all-inclusive. It is understood that the Intern will also perform other reasonable related duties as assigned by the office manager. This position description is not a written contract

Internships may be customized to the student’s area of interest.

Learning Objectives:

Responsibilities:

  • Observe dependency court hearings to learn how the court interacts with the child welfare system.
  • Observe multidisciplinary inter-agency team meetings following the removal of a child from his/her/their family of origin.
  • Develop an appreciation for the impact CASA volunteers have on the court and the child welfare system.
  • Build relationships with the Court and Children and Youth Services to research case histories.
  • Gain insight into the issues confronting children who experience abuse and/or neglect.
  • Expand their understanding of the importance of confidentiality.
  • Participate in CASA volunteer training.
  • Assist in data collection, entry, and tracking.
  • Practice administrative responsibilities.

    2. Pennsylvania Child Abuse History Clearance from the Department of Human Services
    3. Fingerprint based Federal Criminal History (FBI) Record Check through the Department of Human Services

    5. National Sex Offender Registry Check
  • Must sign a Confidentiality Statement and Conflict of Interest Disclosure.
  • Must have access to a vehicle, be willing and able to travel, and possess a valid driver’s license.

Internship Opportunities:

Program
The CASA Development Intern will learn about the child welfare system, gain an overview of the federal child abuse and neglect laws, will be able to attend court and observe dependency court hearings, in addition to understanding how the CASA volunteer role intersects with the Juvenile Court System and relates to others in the system. While the Intern will not be responsible for the direct supervision of volunteer advocates, they will be able to observe and participate in case management responsibilities and will learn about the issues and dynamics within families in crisis related to child abuse and neglect.

Volunteer Management
This position will develop an intern’s skills in nonprofit management and volunteer recruitment and retention. The intern will be responsible for helping to developing community outreach efforts, organizing volunteer appreciation events, and creating a volunteer retention strategy. The intern will be expected to assist CASA staff with agency events.

Social Media and Marketing
This position will increase an intern’s knowledge of social media tools and nonprofit management. The intern will utilize social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and LinkedIn to promote CASA and increase awareness. The intern will be helping to update the programs website and help maintain the marketing and promotion strategy. They will also be responsible for creating and organizing ads for both print and non-traditional media. Responsibilities include event development, organization, promotion, and coordination. This position also affords an intern the opportunity to work closely with the Communications Manager and learn nonprofit management skills. The intern will be responsible for making calls, organizing notes, promoting events.
